How to compare NDT training before you enroll

What this training comparison helps you decide

This free planner organizes two or three course options that you enter from actual descriptions or quotations. It keeps the method, intended qualification route and currency common to the comparison, then shows the amounts you have entered and the questions still unresolved. It does not search a course marketplace, supply prices or rank providers. The useful result is a reviewable planning record: what each offer includes, which information came from the provider, and what you still need to confirm before choosing a course.

Begin with the original course pages or written proposals beside you. Give each option a recognizable course and provider name, and record its source reference and the date checked. A short quotation number is useful when a web address alone will not identify the offer later. If the source changes, update the comparison deliberately and retain the previous proposal outside the tool. The planner cannot verify that a provider's published claim is accurate, current or accepted for your intended qualification route.

Compare a common method and a common goal

Choose the method or subject and the intended route before entering costs. Two courses with similar names may serve different purposes: initial method training, examination preparation, a technique extension or continuing development. Describe that difference in the notes. A lower subtotal does not make an introductory course a substitute for a course your receiving authority requires. If the route is still uncertain, leave it unconfirmed and use the comparison to organize the questions needed to resolve it.

For a United States learner, the receiving authority may be an employer responsible for a written practice, a certification body or an organization with a specific customer program. Ask what training evidence it expects and who can review the proposed course. Use the existing ASNT Level II route-choice guide for the broader qualification discussion. This worksheet is most effective after that discussion has identified a plausible goal; it should not quietly choose the goal because one course happens to be nearby or inexpensive.

Separate employer-based qualification from central certification

ASNT's certification comparison distinguishes its ASNT NDT and ASNT 9712 programs, including differences in examination arrangements. A training course advertised with the ASNT name does not by itself establish which program is involved or complete an employer's qualification process. Ask the employer or receiving certification body to identify the exact route, relevant method and scope, and the evidence it will accept. Keep a course completion record distinct from an issued personnel certificate and from authorization to perform a particular task.

Record the answer in the course notes and choose the requirement-review status that reflects the actual discussion. Do not describe an employer-based route as inferior or a central credential as automatic permission to work everywhere. The appropriate choice depends on the intended assignment and receiving requirements. A provider can explain its course, but the organization that will rely on the training must resolve acceptance. The comparison records that review; it does not grant certification, determine employment eligibility or authorize inspection work.

Verify the training provider and the specific course

Check approval or recognition at the level relevant to the route. BINDT publishes an approved-training list and notes that company-based courses must also satisfy the employer's written practice and training program. A recognized organization may offer several courses with different purposes or scopes. Ask whether the particular course, location, delivery format and date you are considering match the evidence your receiving authority needs. Keep the provider's explanation and the official source reference together rather than relying only on a logo in an advertisement.

Recognition information can change. NRCan maintains a current list of recognized training organizations and relevant notices, which is useful when evaluating a Canadian route or a cross-border option. Do not assume an old screenshot establishes current acceptance of every method offered by a school. For a deeper evidence checklist, use the training-provider review guide. In this planner, capture the exact course identity and the unresolved question, then keep its review pending until the responsible party has confirmed the intended use.

Record practical hours as a provider-reported figure

Enter the hands-on hours only when the provider states them. Leave the field blank if the figure is unavailable rather than estimating it from the number of course days. Ask what the figure includes: individual equipment practice, group demonstrations, specimen interpretation, supervised exercises or an examination. Those activities may contribute differently to your learning objective. The tool preserves the entered number; it does not decide whether those hours meet a scheme requirement or count toward industrial experience.

A larger number is not automatically better evidence of useful practice. Ask how learners use the equipment, receive feedback and encounter relevant materials or geometries. Compare the answer with the actual method and work you intend to pursue. Use the hands-on training laboratory guide for a detailed discussion rather than attempting to reproduce a complete course audit in the notes. The useful comparison is a transparent record of what is promised and what your reviewer has accepted, not a numeric score inferred from advertised hours.

Keep the experience gap outside the course-hour arithmetic

ASNT's ASNT 9712 Level II information identifies training and work experience as separate application evidence. Completing a classroom or practical course does not justify treating all remaining qualification requirements as satisfied. Ask the receiving authority to review your existing evidence and identify what is still needed. The tool has no automatic credit calculator and does not subtract advertised practical hours from an experience requirement. A blank or incomplete evidence record should lead to a question, not an invented eligibility date.

Use the training-gap planning guide and experience-log guide for the records behind that discussion. Keep the comparison focused on the offered course and its cost scenario. If a provider proposes a separate experience arrangement, obtain its written description and ask the receiving authority how it is evaluated. Do not add it to the course merely because the same company offers both. Clear separation helps you avoid paying for a package whose different elements do not all serve the qualification goal you intended.

Use the four cost treatments deliberately

Every cost category starts as Not confirmed. That means its treatment is unresolved, not that the amount is zero. Select Add a separate amount only for a charge that must be added to the other entered figures. Select Included in another entered amount when a quoted package already covers the category, and identify that relationship in the notes. Use Confirmed not needed when you have checked that the category does not apply to the scenario being compared.

The known subtotal adds valid amounts entered separately. It remains a known subtotal when other costs are unresolved. Marking every line included without entering the package amount does not produce a complete comparison. If a course is genuinely free for the scenario, enter an explicit zero and still review the other categories. When you add more than one amount, confirm that the charges do not overlap. That confirmation records your check of the source proposal; the tool cannot read the contract and establish the relationship for you.

Separate tuition from examinations and application charges

Use Tuition for the quoted teaching charge or the package amount that covers the course as described. Use Examination / application for a separate confirmed amount when the comparison includes it. A provider may offer a course examination, a certification examination or preparation for an examination administered elsewhere. Ask which is meant before deciding that examination costs are included. Record who administers the examination and what outcome its completion produces, without treating a course assessment as an automatically issued personnel certificate.

If the examination amount includes several items, keep the source breakdown in the notes or in the original proposal. Do not add a listed component fee again when it is already part of the total entered. Clarify what happens if eligibility review or scheduling is incomplete when the course begins. The worksheet can show the cost and open question, but it cannot reserve an examination, approve an application or predict whether you will pass. Those decisions and arrangements remain with the provider, certification body and receiving authority.

Clarify materials, equipment and access to learning resources

The Materials / equipment line is for confirmed costs in your chosen scenario. Ask whether required manuals, specimens, software access, instrument use or protective items are supplied, separately charged or outside the offer. A long list of resources on a course page may describe optional purchases rather than mandatory costs. Enter only the amount that applies to the course option you are comparing, and explain the basis where a package combines several items.

Check access duration and practical availability. A resource available only during attendance may serve a different learning need from one the learner can use afterwards. For blended or online delivery, ask how practical activities and technical feedback are arranged. Use the online and blended training guide for those wider questions. The comparison should preserve the provider's actual promise, not convert an attractive delivery description into a claim that it satisfies your employer or certification body's requirements.

Treat travel and accommodation as separate scenarios

Enter travel and accommodation from actual arrangements or confirmed quotations in the common currency. A local course may have no accommodation requirement, while a distant option may need travel for both training and a separately scheduled examination. Confirm which visits the entered amounts cover. The planner does not calculate mileage, room nights, transport fares or daily allowances. If the plan is uncertain, leave the category unconfirmed and record the missing information rather than supplying a convenient estimate as if it were a provider quote.

Keep the scenario consistent across options. If one course requires a separate practical visit, do not compare only its online tuition with another course's complete attendance package. Clarify whether changed dates could affect the arrangements. Travel time and time away from work may matter to your decision even when they are not entered as financial charges. Record such considerations in the notes instead of disguising them as a market price. The purpose is to make the real differences visible while keeping the arithmetic tied to figures you can substantiate.

Use other costs for a documented amount with a clear basis

Other costs / explicit taxes can hold a confirmed additional amount that is not already represented elsewhere. State what it covers and retain the source breakdown if several charges are combined. The tool does not calculate tax liability or apply an assumed percentage. If tax is included in an entered package amount, do not add it again. If its treatment is unresolved, preserve that uncertainty instead of treating the amount as zero because the proposal did not mention it clearly.

Separate optional purchases from requirements necessary to meet your goal. A preparatory module, an additional assessment or a later retake may be a possible future scenario rather than a charge in the current offer. Describe that distinction in the notes. If you choose to compare a revised scenario, obtain or establish the relevant confirmed amounts and label it accordingly. Avoid adding every possible future expense to one option while comparing another only on its initial tuition. Consistent scope matters as much as accurate addition.

Use one currency without implying a conversion

Choose a common currency for all options. The planner does not fetch exchange rates or convert amounts. If a currency change is requested after amounts have been entered, it asks to clear those amounts before you enter confirmed figures in the new currency. This also applies to an optional third course whose entries are currently hidden. Course notes and cost treatments remain, so review them against the new figures rather than assuming the old commercial basis still applies.

Use offers in the same currency or establish a documented purchasing scenario outside the tool before entering converted figures. Retain the original amounts and the conversion basis with your source records. Enter plain numbers in the format requested by the form, without currency symbols or grouping commas. Do not assume two offers are comparable simply because their totals now carry the same label. Differences in included items, payment timing or unresolved charges remain part of the review even after the arithmetic uses one currency.

Keep requirement-review status honest

Review pending is appropriate when the employer, certification body or other receiving authority has not yet resolved whether the course matches your intended route. Requirements reviewed with receiving authority records a review you report; it is not a platform endorsement or an eligibility decision. Does not currently match requirements identifies a known mismatch that needs resolution before you rely on the course for that goal. Use the notes to record who reviewed the option, the question discussed, the date and any conditions still attached.

Cost completeness and requirement review are separate. An option can have every price category resolved while remaining unsuitable or unconfirmed for the intended qualification. Conversely, an appropriate course can still have unknown travel or examination charges. Read both sets of open questions. If the goal changes, revisit the review status rather than carrying a previous confirmation forward automatically. Use the application-readiness guide to organize the broader evidence when it is time to approach the receiving body with a complete application or employer review.

Ask about cancellation and schedule dependencies before committing

Record the provider's terms for cancellation, rescheduling, substitutions and minimum attendance where they affect your choice. Clarify whether a course cancellation also changes the examination or accommodation arrangements, and which organization controls each booking. A tuition refund policy may not settle separately arranged travel. The tool does not interpret contract terms or predict recoverable amounts. Keep the exact terms with the proposal and summarize the practical question you need answered in the course notes.

Check the order of decisions. If the receiving authority still needs to review the course or your prerequisite evidence, avoid treating a scheduled start date as proof that review is complete. Ask how long the actual application and scheduling process takes through the responsible organizations without relying on a generic promise of rapid certification. The comparison can help you see these dependencies, but it cannot remove them. A useful next action may be obtaining one missing confirmation rather than choosing the course with the earliest advertised date.

Worked example: two hypothetical offers with different gaps

Consider a hypothetical learner comparing two UT courses for an employer-reviewed route. Course A presents a package that includes tuition, materials and its stated examination component. Course B quotes tuition separately and leaves the examination arrangement unclear. The learner enters each confirmed package or separate amount once, marks included items accordingly and leaves Course B's unresolved examination cost unconfirmed. No actual school, price or market rate is implied by this example. The comparison shows different evidence and cost states rather than declaring either option the winner.

The employer then explains that the learner needs a particular practical component whose coverage is unclear in Course A's description. The learner leaves its requirement review pending and asks for the syllabus and provider-reported hands-on details. Course B may have a more complete teaching description but still an incomplete cost scenario. The useful result is a targeted question for each provider and a clear record for the employer. A smaller subtotal would not resolve either gap, and a larger practical-hour figure would not independently establish qualification eligibility.

Export a planning record and keep the original evidence

Entries stay in the current browser tab's memory and are lost on refresh. The tool does not create an account, upload the entered course details, enroll you or take a payment. When you choose Download comparison CSV, it generates a file containing the visible options, entered figures, cost treatments, review statuses and unresolved questions. Save it if you need to keep the comparison, and check the downloaded file before relying on it in a later discussion.

The CSV is a snapshot of your entries, not a certificate or a verified supplier quote. Keep the original course descriptions, quotations and review correspondence alongside it. If you change an option later, export a clearly identified revision so an older incomplete comparison is not mistaken for the current decision. Use the training-evidence guide for organizing the records that follow attendance. This planner's job ends with a transparent comparison and next actions; the provider and receiving authority remain responsible for their actual decisions.

Common questions

Does the planner supply NDT training prices?

No. Enter amounts from actual course descriptions or quotations in one currency. The tool adds the entered amounts and keeps unconfirmed costs visible; it does not estimate market prices.

Does a completed comparison confirm certification eligibility?

No. Cost completeness and qualification eligibility are separate questions. Confirm training, experience, examinations and authorization requirements with the employer or certification body for your intended route.

Can I compare courses quoted in different currencies?

Use one common currency for a comparison. The tool does not fetch exchange rates. If you change currency after entering amounts, it asks you to clear those amounts and re-enter confirmed figures.

Are my course details saved to an account?

No. Entries remain in the current browser tab and are lost on refresh. You can download a CSV containing the comparison and unresolved questions. The tool does not upload your entered course details.
